For National Heritage Week 2021 ICRI are presenting a series of online talks by our members about how their work preserves and conserves cultural heritage in Ireland. In this talk, National Gallery of Ireland Paper Conservator, Mathilde Renauld will discuss the care and preservation of photographs in the national collection. The National Gallery of Ireland has seen an expansion of its photographic collection, going from 25 objects classified as Photographs in 2017, to over 1330 in 2021. The collection comprises 21st, 20th, and 19th century photographs of varying formats and processes. The talk will also cover a brief history of photographic processes, an overview of the usual condition issues faced when dealing with photographs, as well as the challenges linked to building our care of collection for photographic material from the ground up at NGI. These challenges include re-thinking acquisitions, storage issues, buying materials, re-housing, handling training for staff, and creating a new reference library.
