What is Conservation?
Conservation treatment makes our cultural heritage accessible. Treatments are carried out by trained professionals and follow a methodical approach, following consultation and thorough examination.
An Interdisciplinary Field
Conservation is an interdisciplinary field involving studio practices, science and the humanities. Conservator-restorers specialise in specific materials or object types. Conservator-restorers may work independently or alongside fellow professionals such as curators, librarians, technicians, engineers and educators. They can be freelance, part of a studio or part of a heritage organisation.
The Conservator-Restorer
A conservator-restorer works on projects and/or is involved in the holistic preservation of a heritage collection. He/she will understand and respect an object's historical and cultural integrity, apply chemically inert and reversible treatments and follow established professional standards (see ICRI Code of Conduct).
